Basilica in old Gagra town

×Details

Location:  Georgia, the autonomous republic of Abkhazia, town of Gagra.

Construction inside the complex: the three-churched basilica.

Historical-architectural description: The church is dated back to the 6th century.  The church is represented by three-church basilica. It is constructed with roughly defined ashlar stones, with straight rows. Entrance of the main nave is located in the west part, whilst to the south nave – from the elongated wall. The south nave is connected to the main church with two small doors. One door leads us to the north side chapel, which has its own independent entrance into the west wall. The main church is lit with three windows on the south wall and with one window each on the western wall and in alters. The design of the church is surrounded by “Bolnuri” crosses, which is located on the east door timpani and next to the window. The old Gagra basilica is very similar to the three-church basilica samples spread in Georgia in the 6th – 9th centuries, particularly, to the architecture of the churches constructed in Eastern Georgia.

Current condition: The territory is currently occupied by Russia, because of which it is impossible to study  and to conduct the appropriate works.

But we have information that the appearance of the church is satisfactory, the roof needs a  change  and the castle needs conservation works.

Gagra Basilica has been given the status of culture heritage monument.
