Architectural complex in Akhali Atoni settlement

Location: Georgia, the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, Gudauta municipality, settlement of  Akhali Atoni .

Constructions  inside the complex: the church, the monastic structures. 

Historical-architectural description: In 1875 monks, who came from Greece, monasteries of Mount Athoni,  founded the church of St. Panteleimon on Mount Iveria, on the territory of present Akhali Atoni . Construction works of the monastic structures and churches of Akhali Atoni were kept on Akhali Atoni  in 1883-1896 as well.

In the centre of the west building 50 m. high bell-tower is erected. In the lower part of the bell-tower, a monastic refectory is located. In the middle of the monastic complex, five-domed church of St. Panteleimon is erected, in the architecture of which traits of the so called Neo Byzantine style are discernible. Interior of the church  is totally embellished with the mural decoration.

Current condition:  The territory is currently occupied by Russia, because of which it is impossible to study the current condition and to conduct adequate works.

Akhali Atoni monastery has been given the status of culture heritage monument.
