Architectural complex in Kelasuri village

Location: Georgia, the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia,  Sokhumi municipality, village of  Kelasuri.

Construction  inside the complex:  the church.

Date of built11th-14th centuries.

Architectural description: 11th-14th cc. architectural ensemble is located not far from the village Kelsauri, Sokhumi district. A large aisles vaulted church with two entrances (from the south and from the north) is erected in the centre of the complex. The church is most likely to have been adorned with the mural decoration. In 1885, archaeological excavations in Kelasuri church were held by the colonel Tsilosani, who had unearthed fragments of diverse ecclesiastical objects, of old icons frames and of a bell.

Next to the main church, minor church of later date, as well as other structures is located. Kelasuri ecclesiastical complex was surrounded by a massive stone enclosure with the large arched entrance.

Current condition: The territory is currently occupied by Russia, because of which it is impossible to study the current condition and to conduct the suitable works.
