Location: Georgia, the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, Gali municipality, village of Okumi.
Construction inside the complex: the church.
Date of built: The first half of the 11th century and 19th century.
Historical -architectural description: Okumi Church of Annunciation was built by the Great Dukes of Emkhi (Emukhvaris) at the beginning of the 11th century during the last period of the reign of the King of All Georgia Bagrat the III – the King of “Abkhazians and Kartvels” (Georgians) (Iv. Gegia’s “Okumi Library” Archive). The Church was burnt due to the invasion of the Ottomans at the beginning of the 18th century. The present Church was restored on the old foundation inthe 19th century.
The church represents a large Hall building with the protruding apse. From the West it has gates. The church roof is covered with the beam system. The windows and door have the profiled framing from the façade and the cornice is castellated.
In 2008 in agreement with the Patriarchy of Georgia, the works for conservation of the church building were conducted – the foundation was stabilized, the church was cleared out from the weeds and the garbage of the many years, it was fully covered with the aluminum sheets, the iron doors were made with observing of the church architecture standards and the windows were replaced with the new ones.
Current condition: The territory is currently occupied by Russia, because of which it is impossible to study the current condition and to conduct the suitable works.
