Construction inside the complex: The palace.
Historical-Architectural description: The palace is located in the outskirts of a vast field – “Likhtashta”. On 26 July 1866, anti-tsarist, anti-colonial rebellion of Abkhazia started here. During the suppression of this rebellion in August 1866, Russian General-Lieutenant Svyatopol-Mirski, Governor of Kutaisi, burnt the palace down. From this enormous structure, only the walls survived the fire.
Firstly, the palace was two-storied, built of diverse materials (limestone, sandstone, brick, etc.). Several building layers are discernible in the masonry of the walls, from which, older was constructed in the 16th-17th cc. with limestone tiles. In the 19th c the palace was transformed and considerably extended.
Current condition: The territory is currently occupied by Russia, because of which it is impossible to study and to conduct the related works. The palace is in a heavy physical condition. It needs urgent conservation and restoration works.
Shervashidze’s Palace has been given the status of national importance monument.
