Church in Ghumurishi village

Location: Georgia, the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia,  Gali  municipality, village of  Ghumurishi.

Construction  inside the complex:  the church.

Date of built: The first half of the 11th century and 19th century.

Historical-architectural description: Single-naved church built in the first half of the 11th c. by Queen Sagdukht is located in the village gumurish, Gali district. Name of the church builder is mentioned in the inscription discovered in the church courtyard: “Lord, had mercy in both lives upon the builder of the church Quenn of Queens Sagdukht, daughter of Niania. Amen”

“Queen of Queens Sagdukht” seems most likely to be the daughter of Niania, Eristavi Eristavi of Racha and the wife of Eristavt of Odishi. in the 19th c. the church was restored and present design of the church exterior is dated to this period.

In 1990s, one more Georgian inscription-an epitaph of the tomb-in mkhedruli script was discovered in the church courtyard.

Current condition: The territory is currently occupied by Russia, because of which it is impossible to study the current condition and to conduct the suitable works.

    Ghumurishi  church has been given the status of culture heritage monument.
