Ambara church in Miusera village

Location: Georgia, the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, Gudauta municipality, on the cape of  Miusera.

Constructions  inside the complex: the church, the Fence and the rubbles of secular buildings.

Historical-architectural description: 

Ambara preserved early medieval Georgian architecture complex – church (7th –8th cc.), Fence (Middle Ages) and the ruins of secular buildings (10th c.). The church is adorned with roughly processed ashlar stones that have survived almost in its original form. It is the so-called three-nave basilica building. On the west side, the church has two-story narthexes and upper gallery. The main nave vault was restored in the late middle ages. Ambara three-nave basilica represents an important example of this type’s architectural monuments.

Current Condition: The territory is currently occupied by Russia, because of which it is impossible to study and to conduct the necessary works. The church is in a heavy physical condition, it needs urgent rehabilitation.

Ambara church has been given the status of culture heritage monument.
